Hey! Welcome to “Dreadville” — my first ever map mod. With b42 unstable just out, and the modding tools not yet updated for it, this seems an awkward time to release a new map, buuuuuut, as I originally made this map for my multiplayer saves, I figured, "Well, I have to share it on the workshop in some capacity for my server to work, so I might as well go all in and go public - someone outside will like it." So, here you go, someone! (Speaking of multiplayer worlds - you’re more than welcome to join mine. Yeah, I'm serious!) Just shoot me a friend request and drop in any time - the server is open any time I'm in-game, and it's always nice to meet some new people!
Right now, we're just getting to know the map and experimenting with "From"-based gameplay. You're welcome to hop in regardless of location, skill, mic, etc, - it's just about hanging out and having fun :)
That aside, as of June 3rd, 2025, the b41 version of this map is complete! From here, I'll be working on my other upcoming maps (2 historical maps scheduled for b42 stable, and one dystopian roleplaying map for b41 :D), and on upgrading/revamping this for b42 when the tools get updated! Do still let me know about any gameplay issues you may come across, should there be any - thus far I've been working with more or less no feedback, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's something I've missed!
Basic Description of The Map (spoiler free):
Dreadville is a small challenge/scenario map which traps you and your friends in a small, inescapable “noplace," separate from the vanilla map. Somewhat inspired by TV show “From,” the map is desolate and overgrown, and generally designed in a mid-century style. There are a handful of points of interest on the map, like the decrepit, mid-century-style town (with a layout loosely based off of "The Town" in "From,"), a survivor outpost I nicknamed "The Settlement", (more clearly inspired by the Colony House, also in From), and a number of other minor POI's across the map, like scattered fire-watch towers, and the occasional random cabin. Outside of that, the map is mostly nature - a blank canvas for you to build what you will.
What/Who This Map is For:
- Close-knit Multiplayer Use: The main demographic I had in mind for this map, is small/medium-scale servers, or groups of friends, who want to survive as a close-knit community. The limited space and resources makes for an intimate and sometimes competitive environment where it can really pay off to stick together, whether it be against the environment, or a common enemy.
- Horror and Hardmode - The entire premise of Dreadville is that you're stuck there with no escape, which inherently makes playing on the map a little tense. There is no real future in sight here, after all, only survival. Also contributing to the unease, is the low visibility on the map, courtesy of the dense forests all over the map. Monsters lurk within, and you won't always spot them in time. With the right mods and settings, Dreadville can help lift Project Zomboid into horror territory. Go crazy with it!
- Wilderness-Survival Gameplay: Civilization is sparse and the town is decrepit for a reason - you'll need to turn to nature for your needs sooner or later. Dreadville can serve as a slightly easier alternative to wilderness-survival maps like The Forest and Lost to Nature (my favourites :D!) - Or, at the very least, it may be easier to coax your friends into using if they're not quite as fond of camping as you!
- Mid-Century/Vintage Roleplay: With mid-century inspired architecture and designs, there's a lot of room to get creative with time-play. Be as conventional or unconventional as you want to be with this - in theory, you could ditch the zombies, tidy up a bit, and live out the cozy American dream with a couple of friends as a self-sustaining, isolated village in the 50's/60's!
Tediously Detailed Details (Spoilers Ahead):
- Map Size: The map is 4x4 cells - quite small. You could compare it as being confined to the town of Muldraugh in vanilla-game, only with significantly less resources and buildings. Because of this, the map *might* be best enjoyed with close friends, or a group of people who are willing to co-operate, as there's no shortage of things and territories people would want to fight for. Otherwise, it also looks like this could be a pretty good map for PvP, but I wouldn't know for sure, as I don't do PvP. You be the judge, let me know!
- Main POI: The Town: Central hub with ~a dozen houses, a diner, a bar/gas station, a fancy farm, an 8-room motel, a police station, a fire station, 3 storage units, 3 garages, and one abandoned elementary school, which has been make-shifted into a medical clinic.
- POI: "The Settlement”: Westernmost survivor outpost consisting of a large Victorian mansion, surrounded by 3 greenhouses, 2 fields, and some sheds. Also has a nice lake nearby. Is connected to the town via a long dirt road.
- Additional, Minor POIs: Two plane wrecks, two boat wrecks, a huge junk/scrapyard, a couple stray cabins, two hangars, a handful of fire-watch towers, and multiple lakes, swamps, and rivers...
